Wisdom Teeth

Woman with dark curly hair wearing a scarf with plant life behind her with a large smile and wearing braces. Wisdom teeth, also referred to as the third molars, get their name by being the last teeth to come in during young adulthood. As part of your regular dental exams, Dr. Tigran or Dr. Lorena will examine you to determine if your wisdom teeth are healthy and properly positioned.

Video: Why do we have wisdom teeth?

Wisdom Teeth need to be removed if you have the following symptoms:

•  Pain
•  Infection
•  Cysts
•  Tumors
•  Damage to adjacent teeth
•  Gum disease

Dr. Tigran, Dr. Lorena, or a specialist that they have referred you to, may also recommend removal to prevent problems or for other reasons, such as when removal is part of another treatment plan.

Wisdom teeth that are not removed should continue to be monitored, because they still could potentially cause issues in the future. As with many other health conditions, people are at greater risk for health problems as they age, and that includes potential problems with their wisdom teeth.

Tooth Extraction Post-Operative Instructions

•  After a Tooth Extraction
You may experience bleeding, oozing, soreness, or moderate to severe pain. Your bleeding should stop by 8-12 hours following the extraction. If you experience significant bleeding past this time please call our office immediately at (425) 558-9998. Oozing of pink fluid for 1-2 days is normal.
•

Tooth Extraction Pain

Pain is best managed with a mild analgesic like Tylenol, Advil, or Aleve. If you experience severe pain that lasts more than 2-3 days after your extraction please call our office at (425) 558-9998.
•  Dental Upkeep
It is important to not disturb the extraction site. Remember to eat a soft diet for 24 hours following the extraction. Avoid vigorously rinsing with any type of liquid for the first 24 hours.
•  After 24 Hours
Please rinse with strong warm salt water for 1 minute a couple of times daily for 3-4 days. This will reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth and will promote better healing.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call us.
